Welcome to Forem News!

Forem News delivers the day's headlines as quick, ~100-word summary cards. Swipe up to move to the next story, and tap any card to read the full article on the original publisher's website. Stories are aggregated from 60+ trusted publishers across India and the world.

First Launch

1. Install Forem News from Google Play or the App Store and open it
2. Swipe through the short intro slides (or tap Skip)
3. Pick at least 3 categories you want to follow — you can change these anytime
4. Start swiping through your feed!

Reading the Cards

Each story is a full-screen card with a photo, headline, and a summary of roughly 100 words. A position indicator (e.g. "3 / 40") shows where you are in the feed.

• Swipe down - Previous story
• Tap the card - Open the full article from the original publisher
• Bookmark icon - Save the story for later
• Share icon - Send the headline and link to friends

Where Do Summaries Come From?

Summaries are built from each publisher's own feed. If the feed excerpt is very short, Forem News fetches a longer summary from the article page so most cards read as a complete ~100-word brief.

Reading the Full Story

Tapping a card opens the full article in an in-app browser (Safari View on iOS, Custom Tabs on Android). Every card credits its publisher — "Powered by [source]" — and always links back to the original website.

Managing Categories

1. Open Settings (gear icon on the home screen)
2. Tap Categories
3. Tap any category to turn it on or off
4. Use the search box or Select all to manage them quickly

You can also tap the + button at the end of the tab bar on the home screen to jump straight to the category picker.

Available Topics

Top Stories, India, Government, World, International, US, Politics, Business, Markets, Startups, Technology, Gaming, Cricket, Sports, Entertainment, Bollywood, Automobile, Science, Environment, Health, Lifestyle, Fashion, Travel, Education, and Opinion.

How Tabs Work

• Every enabled category appears as a tab on the home screen
• My Feed (the ⚡ tab) always combines all your enabled categories
• Disabled categories are hidden from tabs, My Feed, and search

State & UT Categories

Forem News includes 36 regional categories covering every Indian state and union territory — from Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu to Ladakh and Lakshadweep. They are turned off by default so your feed stays focused until you opt in.

Enabling a State Feed

1. Go to Settings > Categories
2. Scroll to the Indian states & territories section
3. Tap the states you want to follow
4. Each enabled state appears as its own tab on the home screen

Where State News Comes From

State feeds combine regional publishers (such as EastMojo, OrissaPOST, Onmanorama, Telangana Today, and Greater Kashmir) with a Google News search feed for that state, so even smaller states get steady coverage.

Choosing Your Publishers

1. Open Settings > News Sources
2. Browse publishers grouped by type: Indian news, Regional & states, International, Business & markets, Tech & science, Sports & gaming, Entertainment & lifestyle, and More
3. Tap a publisher to hide or show its stories
4. Use search or Select all for bulk changes

Hidden publishers disappear everywhere — from your feeds, My Feed, and search results.

Included Sources

Forem News aggregates 60+ trusted outlets, including BBC, The Guardian, Reuters-syndicated feeds, NYT, Al Jazeera, Times of India, The Hindu, NDTV, Indian Express, Hindustan Times, India Today, PIB (Government of India), Economic Times, Mint, TechCrunch, The Verge, ESPNcricinfo, Variety, Bollywood Hungama, ScienceDaily, and many more.

Feed Health Indicators

• Green dot - The source delivered stories recently ("Updated X ago")
• Grey dot - "No updates yet" — the publisher's feed hasn't delivered lately

My Feed

The ⚡ My Feed tab combines the latest stories from every category you've enabled, with duplicates removed and the newest news first.

How Ordering Works

• Freshness first - Today's stories always come before yesterday's
• Trending boost - Stories covered by several publishers at once rise higher
• Variety - The feed avoids showing long runs from a single publisher
• Junk filtering - Photo galleries, horoscopes, quizzes, sponsored posts, and deal roundups are filtered out automatically

Refreshing Your Feed

• Tap the refresh icon in the top bar
• Or pull down on the feed to refresh
• The app also refreshes automatically when you return after a break

Saving a Story

Tap the bookmark icon on any news card. The icon fills in to confirm the story is saved.

Viewing Bookmarks

1. Tap the bookmark icon in the top bar of the home screen
2. Scroll your saved stories — a search box appears when the list grows
3. Tap any bookmark to open the full article

Removing Bookmarks

• Tap the bookmark icon on the card again, or
• In the Bookmarks screen, swipe left on an item to delete it — with an Undo option if you change your mind

Searching

1. Tap the search icon in the top bar
2. Type a keyword, topic, or publisher name
3. Cached results appear instantly, then fresh results load from the network

What Search Covers

• Headlines, summaries, and source names
• All enabled categories (disabled categories are excluded)
• Only publishers you haven't hidden in News Sources

What Is the Daily Digest?

The Daily Digest is a single, optional notification each day — "Your daily briefing is ready ☀️" — that reminds you to catch up on the news. It's scheduled entirely on your device; there's no push server and no tracking.

Turning It On

1. Open Settings > Notifications
2. Toggle Daily digest on
3. Allow notification permission when prompted
4. Pick your preferred time (default is 8:00 AM)

Good to Know

• It's one notification per day — Forem News never sends per-article alerts
• Delivery time can vary by a few minutes (the system batches notifications to save battery)
• If you denied permission, enable notifications for Forem News in your phone's system settings and toggle the digest again

Sharing a Story

1. Tap the share icon on any news card (or in the Bookmarks list)
2. Your phone's share sheet opens
3. Choose WhatsApp, email, messages, or any other app

The share includes the headline, the publisher's name, and a link to the original article, so your friends can read the full story even without Forem News installed.

Offline Reading

Forem News automatically saves the most recent stories from each of your categories on your device. When you lose connection, the app shows an "Offline · showing saved stories" indicator and lets you keep swiping through the saved summaries.

• Refreshing feeds with new stories

Changing the Theme

1. Open Settings
2. Find the Theme selector
3. Choose System, Light, or Dark

System follows your phone's appearance automatically — dark at night if your phone switches, light during the day.

No Account Required

Forem News has no sign-up, no login, and no user accounts. You can use every feature without providing any personal information.

What Stays on Your Device

• Your category and source preferences
• Bookmarks and reading positions
• Theme and daily digest settings
• Cached stories for offline reading

What We Don't Do

• No ads and no third-party trackers
• No analytics — your reading habits are never collected
• No data sent to Forem servers; the app talks directly to publishers' public feeds
• Notifications are generated locally on your device

"Couldn't load stories"

• Check your connection - Try opening a website in your browser
• Tap Retry - Temporary network blips usually resolve immediately
• Switch networks - Some Wi-Fi networks block news feed domains

Feed Seems Stale

• Pull down to refresh, or tap the refresh icon in the top bar
• Feeds are cached for a few minutes — brand-new stories can take a short while to appear
• Publishers update their feeds at different rates; quiet sources show a grey dot in Settings > News Sources

"No stories from your selected sources"

1. Go to Settings > News Sources
2. Make sure you haven't turned off all publishers for that category
3. Tap Select all to restore everything quickly

General Fixes

1. Force close and reopen the app
2. Check for updates in Google Play / the App Store
3. Restart your phone
4. Reinstall the app if issues persist (note: bookmarks and preferences are stored locally and will be reset)

Checklist

1. Digest enabled? - Settings > Notifications > Daily digest toggle should be on
2. Permission granted? - Check your phone's Settings > Apps > Forem News > Notifications
3. Battery optimization - On some Android phones, aggressive battery savers delay or block scheduled notifications; exclude Forem News from optimization
4. Do Not Disturb - Make sure your digest time doesn't fall inside a DND window

Why the Time Can Vary Slightly

The digest uses battery-friendly scheduling, so the system may deliver it a few minutes after your chosen time. Opening the app re-schedules the digest automatically, which also fixes cases where a phone restart cleared pending notifications.

How Aggregation Works

Forem News aggregates headlines and short summaries from publishers' publicly available RSS/Atom feeds. Every card names its source, and tapping a card always takes you to the full article on the publisher's own website.
