1. Who we are
Forem News is a news reader app for iOS, Android, and macOS that presents short, card-style summaries of stories from publicly available RSS feeds of major news publishers. This policy explains what data the app handles and what never leaves your device.
2. Information we do not collect
Forem News has no server of its own and no user accounts. We do not collect:
- Names, email addresses, phone numbers, or any contact details
- Location data
- Device identifiers or advertising identifiers
- Usage analytics, crash reports, or behavioral data
- Anything you read, search, bookmark, or share
The app contains no analytics SDKs, no advertising SDKs, and no third-party trackers.
3. Data stored on your device only
To make the app work, some information is saved locally on your device. It is never transmitted to us or anyone else:
- Preferences — your chosen theme, and which news categories and sources you have enabled or hidden
- Bookmarks — stories you save for later
- Reading progress — which stories you have already seen and where you left off in each category feed
- Cached content — recently fetched headlines, summaries, and images, kept so the app loads instantly and works offline
You can erase all of this at any time by clearing the app's data in your device settings or by uninstalling the app.
4. Network requests the app makes
Forem News fetches news directly from publishers. When you use the app, your device connects to the publishers' public RSS feeds, article pages, and image servers (for example BBC, The Guardian, Times of India, The Hindu, NDTV, TechCrunch, and others shown in the app's Sources list).
As with any internet connection, those publishers' servers receive standard technical information such as your IP address and a user-agent string identifying the app. This is inherent to how the web works; Forem News adds no identifying information of its own and sends no cookies. Each publisher's own privacy policy governs how they handle such requests.
5. Reading full stories
Tapping "Read full story" opens the publisher's website in a browser view provided by your operating system (such as Safari View Controller or Chrome Custom Tabs). From that point on, you are interacting with the publisher's website directly, and their privacy policy and cookie practices apply.
6. Sharing
The share button uses your device's standard share sheet. What you share, and with which app, is handled entirely by your operating system — Forem News does not see or record it.
7. Notifications
Forem News can optionally send you a once-a-day "daily digest" reminder at a time you choose. This feature:
- Is off by default and only runs if you turn it on in Settings, after granting your device's notification permission
- Is scheduled entirely on your device — there is no push-notification server, and enabling it sends nothing to us or anyone else
- Can be turned off at any time in Settings or by revoking the notification permission in your device settings
8. Children's privacy
Forem News does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children under 13. Since the app collects no personal data at all, there is nothing to collect from children.
9. Changes to this policy
If the app's data practices ever change — for example, if a future version adds an optional feature that requires data collection — this policy will be updated and the effective date above revised before the change takes effect.
